D-DAY BATTLE ACTION REPORTS
FROM VESSELS NEAR USS CORRY
(DD-463)
ON D-DAY |
Some of the shore target numbers mentioned in
the below reports can be seen on the
Utah Beach Bombardment
Maps page. Viewing the maps allows for better understanding of what these
reports are describing. |
Note: Several of the time entries of the heavier ships seem to be about
a half hour later than the time entries of the destroyers. It is unknown
as to whether the larger ships used a different method for recording
entries, or if perhaps it took several minutes for an entry to be made
in the ship's log after the event was seen. That is, they may have been
recording the time that they made their entry in the log, which could
have been several minutes after the actual event happened.

moved and three 210-mm guns were installed.

Note below: With time
entries always entered in sequence from earliest to latest, the 0750 entry
stating "CORRY, hit by shore battery. Sinking rapidly" may actually have
been a typo intended to be entered as 0650 because the later time entries that follow the
0750 entry are actually earlier 0742 and 0747. As listed, entries seem to be recorded
out of sequence.

USS Fitch (DD-462)
Destroyer USS Fitch (DD-462)
4 x 5-inch guns
Note: USS Fitch entry for 0647, and other
entries, refer to
Target #3, which is the Saint-Marcouf / Crisbecq battery that scored
direct hits amidships on USS Corry. Pre-D-Day
intelligence reports for Target #3 were six 155mm guns, but those guns
were moved and three 210-mm guns were installed at Target #3. At
0647 the battery
was out of range for USS Fitch because the Fitch had
moved to a rear area temporarily while heavy aerial bombardment was
occurring. Later, after 0722, when USS Fitch moved in closer to
rescue USS Corry survivors, Fitch took Saint-Marcouf under
continued fire for quite a while as detailed in 0737 entry.
