DESTROYER USS HOBSON (DD-464)

D-DAY CITATION FOR USS HOBSON CREWMEMBER RALPH NEW:

ENCLOSURE "D"

In the name of the President of the United States, it
gives me great pleasure to award this Bronze Star Medal to:

                     Edward Ralph New,

Seaman first class,

United States Naval Reserve.

CITATION

“For outstanding and courageous performance of duty,
as coxswain of the U.S.S. HOBSON motor whaleboat, in the
face of the enemy gunfire, in rescuing survivors from the
U.S.S. CORRY, when that ship was sunk near the enemy held
shore on June 6, 1944.

In spite of enemy shell fire landing in the area during
the early part of the operation, New handled his boat fear-
lessly and skillfully, recovering three full boatloads of
survivors, including the CORRY’s Commanding Officer.  He
exercised fine judgement in rescuing the wounded and ex-
hausted first.  He remained in the area until all survivors
were rescued.

The courage, skill and judgement exercised by New on
this occasion reflect great credit upon the United States
naval service.”

                                      HAROLD R. STARK,

Admiral, U.S. Navy,

Commander, U.S. Naval Forces in Europe.
